The new GST system allows all organizations engaged in the purchase or sale of products or the provision of services, or both, to register and get GSTIN. Registration is mandatory if a minimum threshold turnover is exceeded by the company or when a person begins a new business that is expected to surpass the specified turnover.

Aggregate Turnover

Any business that provides a service value greater than the aggregate of Rs. 20 Lakhs in one year is required to obtain GST registration. The limit is Rs. 10 lakhs in the special category statements. Any entity engaged in the exclusive supply of goods whose aggregate turnover crosses Rs.40 lakhs is required to obtain GST registration.

Inter-State Business

An entity shall register for GST if, irrespective of its aggregate turnover, they supply goods inter-state, i.e. from one state to another. Inter-state service providers only need to apply for GST if their annual revenue exceeds Rs. 20 lakhs. (This limit is Rs. 10 lakhs, in special category states).

E-Commerce Business

Any individual who supplies goods or services via an e-commerce platform shall apply for registration with GST. No matter the turnover, the individual shall register. Sellers on Flipkart, Amazon, and other e-commerce sites, therefore, need to obtain registration for the operation to commence.

Casual Taxable Person

Any individual undertaking providing goods, services through a temporary stall or shop seasonally or intermittently must apply for GST. No matter the annual aggregate turnover, the individual shall apply.

Voluntary Registration

Any entity may voluntarily get GST registration. Earlier, any entity that voluntarily obtained GST could not surrender the registration for a maximum of one year. However, after revisions, the applicant can surrender voluntary GST registration at any time.
